Installing Air Conditioning In Your Home

In many homes, heating was the priority and not a full HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system during construction. Adding air condition to these homes means either replacing the heating system with a new HVAC system or using an add-on air condition system of some sort in the house. In either case, determining the best solution for your situation will dictate the path you take.

Using Existing Ductwork

Homes that have forced hot air heating can have the advantage of heat ducts already installed in the house that the air condition system can use. The ducts are run to each room already so you will not have to open walls or crawl around in the attic to install new air ducts. In some cases, the ductwork may not be large enough to support a modern air conditioning system, but that is rare unless the home is very old. The air condition installer can check the ductwork and let you know if it will support the new system for you before you buy it if you are concerned that it may not work.

Addon Wall Units

If you want to add air conditioning to just one part of the house or if you have an addition that needs air conditioning, one option is to use a wall mounted air conditioning system. These units are similar to the large units used in hotels, but may or may not include heat in them. They are smaller and can be mounted near the top of the wall if you like and will provide enough air for a small ap[artment or studio space, an office, or maybe your computer room. They do not require additional ductwork, but they do have to be installed through the wall so cutting a hole in the side of the home is part of the installation process.

Upgrading to HVAC

If you want to have an entirely new HVAC system installed in your home, it is a good idea to call a heating and air conditioning company and ask them to come out and give you an estimate of the work before you start. There are a lot of things to consider so it is essential to understand the cost, the amount of work involved, and just how much your day to day life will be impacted by the work going on in the home. Once you are clear about the process, the company can install a new system that will include both heat and air conditioning for you, making your home more comfortable all year long.
